Myopia testing & Management Gold Coast

Myopia Testing & Management
Myopia (often called shortsightedness) is an emerging epidemic in our community with up to 25% of Australians now being myopic. The prevalence of myopia in the global population is expected to reach 50% by 2050! Myopia not only impacts the ability to see detail at a distance, but also puts patients at more risk of serious ocular health concerns such as retinal detachment. Early detection and management of myopia and myopia risk in children is essential in order to prevent or slow progression.
What can we do to prevent myopia?
Myopia management and prevention involves:
- Careful and frequent monitoring of myopic or pre-myopic children
- Starting eye checks early, particularly if a child has myopic parents or siblings.
- Encourage kids to spend at least 1.5 hours outside daily
- Encourage plentiful breaks from devices or near-based work.
- Early intervention with myopia management tools such as special design contact lens, spectacle lenses and in some cases Atropine eye drops. These myopia control strategies are available through consultation with our optometrists at Miami Eyes Optometrists on The Gold Coast.
